Rui Hachū began his career as a colorist on Doraemon with Fujiko Fujio, and in 1975 released his first solo work, Hiyoshi, 17 Years Old.
He went on to publish many comics in the same style, following a trend that was very popular in Japan during the 1980s.
Most of his stories featured the same young girl — a recurring character who appeared on nearly all his covers.
Today, this kind of work might be seen as controversial, but at the time, during Japan’s economic boom and the rise of overworked salarymen, these comics offered a form of escape and emotional fantasy.
